Often, but not always: buffeting comes from the airflow leaving the screen edge at your helmet height. A screen a little lower or clearly taller than your line usually beats one that ends right at it.
In low-speed drops and tip-overs they routinely save engine covers and bodywork. At road speed they limit damage rather than prevent it.
