Smart helmets and helmet comms explained

Smart helmets add communication, navigation prompts, cameras or heads-up displays. Treat the electronics as a feature layer on top of a helmet that must still pass certification on its own.

Standards and specs that matter

CertificationThe helmet shell must still meet DOT or ECE 22.06 — electronics do not change that requirement
CommsBluetooth intercom, increasingly with mesh networking for group riding
PowerOnboard battery; a bike-mounted USB socket keeps devices charged on long days

What to look for

  • Whether the electronics are integrated or a bolt-on unit you can move to a new helmet
  • Battery life measured in talk time, not standby — group intercom drains it fastest
  • Mesh versus pairwise Bluetooth if you ride in a group larger than two
  • Speaker pocket depth, so the speakers do not press on your ears
  • Local law on visor-mounted displays and cameras, which varies by market

Mistakes riders make

  • Buying an integrated smart helmet that fits your head badly for the sake of the features
  • Assuming a heads-up display replaces mirrors or shoulder checks
  • Mixing brands in a group and losing intercom compatibility
  • Running navigation, music and intercom together and expecting quoted battery life

FAQ

Are smart helmets legal?

The helmet itself must carry the certification your market requires. Rules on cameras and in-view displays differ by country and sometimes by region, so check locally.

Integrated smart helmet or a separate comms unit?

A separate unit is cheaper, upgradeable and moves between helmets. Integrated systems are tidier and quieter but tie you to that helmet.

Do I need a bike-mounted charger?

If you ride all day with intercom and navigation running, yes. A waterproof USB socket is one of the cheapest useful additions to any bike.
