Motorcycle safety technology, explained plainly

ABS, traction control, IMU-based cornering aids, tyre pressure monitoring and better lighting. Some of it is factory-fitted, and some of it you can add to an older bike for very little.

Standards and specs that matter

ABSMandatory on most new motorcycles above small capacities in the EU and many other markets
Cornering aidsRequire an IMU (lean-angle sensor) to modulate brakes and traction at lean
TPMSAftermarket sensors replace valve caps or fit inside the wheel
LightingLED and auxiliary lights improve both your vision and how early you are seen

What to look for

  • Whether the bike has ABS at all — it is the single highest-value safety system on a motorcycle
  • Whether traction control is IMU-based or a simpler wheel-speed system
  • Aftermarket TPMS, which catches slow punctures before they change handling
  • Auxiliary lighting and brighter brake bulbs or a brake-light modulator for conspicuity
  • Braided lines and fresh fluid, which restore lever feel on older bikes with no electronics at all

Mistakes riders make

  • Trusting rider aids to compensate for cold tyres or bad road surface
  • Fitting extra lighting without checking the charging system can carry it
  • Neglecting basic brake maintenance because the bike has ABS
  • Ignoring tyre pressure between rides — the cheapest safety check there is

FAQ

What is the most useful motorcycle safety feature?

ABS. It prevents wheel lock under emergency braking, which is the situation most riders handle worst.

Can I add safety technology to an older bike?

You cannot retrofit ABS practically, but you can add TPMS, auxiliary and brighter lighting, brake-light modulators, braided brake lines and better tyres.

Does traction control work at lean?

Only if the system uses an IMU that measures lean angle. Simpler systems compare wheel speeds and intervene the same way upright or leaned over.
