1. Remove the wheels
Support the bike on stands, remove the calipers where needed and drop both wheels out.
2. Break the beads
Deflate, remove the valve core and break both beads before levering the old tire off with rim protectors in place.
3. Fit the new tire
Match the rotation arrow, lubricate the beads and lever the tire on without pinching, then seat the beads to the pressure on the sidewall.
4. Balance the wheel
Balance with stick-on weights until the wheel holds any position on the balancer.
5. Refit and torque
Refit wheels and calipers, torque the axles to spec and pump the brake lever until firm.
6. Scrub in
Ride gently for the first 150 km to scrub off the release agent before using the shoulders.
Around $410 at an independent workshop including parts, and up to $645 at a dealer with premium parts. Doing it yourself costs $315 in parts and consumables plus about 90 minutes.
Yes, and most riders do because the rear wears faster. Keep the pair within the same range so front and rear profiles still agree.
Only with a bead breaker and a balancer. Most riders save more by removing the wheels themselves and paying only the fit-and-balance fee.
It works but is not recommended. Profiles differ between makers and mixing them can make the bike run wide or fall into corners.
