Motorcycle Suspension

Rear shocks, fork seals, springs and bushing kits. Spring rate should be matched to rider weight — this is the single most under-done setup step on road motorcycles.

Signs you need new parts

  • Oil weeping down the fork legs
  • Wallowing or pogo over bumps mid-corner
  • Rear that bottoms out with a pillion or luggage
  • Uneven front tire wear or brake dive that will not settle

What to check before buying

  • Set static and rider sag before spending on parts
  • Match spring rate to your kitted weight, not the bike's stock rate
  • Replace fork seals and dust seals together with fresh fork oil
  • Service shock oil and nitrogen every 30,000-40,000 km

OEM vs aftermarket

OEM

OEM shocks are non-rebuildable on most road bikes, so a failure means full replacement at a high price.

Aftermarket

Aftermarket units are rebuildable, spring-rate specified for your weight, and adjustable — the biggest ride-quality upgrade per euro on an older bike.

FAQ

Is a rear shock worth it before tires?

No. Tires and correct sag first; a premium shock cannot fix worn rubber or wrong preload.
