Motorcycle Engine & Filters

Oil filters, air filters, spark plugs and sump hardware. Motorcycles share oil between engine, gearbox and usually a wet clutch, so oil and filter quality matter more than on a car.

Signs you need new parts

  • Oil darker than strong tea or past the service interval
  • Rough idle, misfire or hard cold starting
  • Visibly loaded air filter element
  • Clutch slip under hard acceleration

What to check before buying

  • Use JASO MA/MA2 rated oil — car oils with friction modifiers can slip a wet clutch
  • Fit a new crush washer with every sump plug removal
  • Gap and torque spark plugs to spec; iridium plugs need no re-gapping
  • Note the odometer reading on a sticker after every change

OEM vs aftermarket

OEM

OEM filters have the correct bypass and anti-drainback valves — a real functional difference, not just branding.

Aftermarket

Reputable aftermarket filters match OE spec at lower cost; washable air filters pay for themselves over three services.

FAQ

Can I use car oil in a motorcycle?

Not safely on a wet-clutch bike. Energy-conserving car oils contain friction modifiers that cause clutch slip. Use JASO MA or MA2 rated oil.
