How to check pad thickness
Most calipers let you see the pad material from the side without removing anything — look through the caliper opening at the friction material pressed against the rotor. Manufacturers typically call for replacement around 1–1.5 mm of remaining material; many pads also have a wear groove or indicator line molded into the pad face.

Don't forget the rotors
Pads and rotors wear as a pair, and running pads down to the backing plate will score the rotor, sometimes badly enough to require replacement instead of just resurfacing. Measure rotor thickness against the minimum stamped on the rotor itself — most bikes specify a minimum thickness in the manual and often stamped directly on the disc.
Warped rotors show up as a pulsing sensation through the lever or pedal under braking, independent of pad wear. That's a rotor issue, not something new pads will fix.
