Slip-On vs Full Exhaust System: Which One Should You Buy?

Slip-on and full exhaust systems get lumped together in most conversations, but they solve different problems at very different price points.

What each one actually replaces

A slip-on exhaust replaces only the muffler (the end can), sliding over the stock mid-pipe. A full (or full titanium/full race) system replaces everything from the header pipes back, including the mid-pipe and often the catalytic converter housing.

Power gains: expectations vs reality

A slip-on alone typically frees up 1–3 horsepower, mostly from reduced backpressure and weight, and won't meaningfully change the power curve without a matching fuel/ECU remap.

A full system removes the restrictive stock header and often the catalytic converter, which can yield more meaningful gains, especially on bikes with restrictive stock headers — but only when paired with a fuel management adjustment (Power Commander, ECU flash, or fuel screw tuning). Without retuning, the bike can run lean and risk engine damage.

Sound and legality

  • Removing baffles or db-killers significantly increases noise and can push a bike over local noise ordinance limits (often 80–95 dB depending on jurisdiction).
  • Full systems that delete the catalytic converter are not street-legal in many US states and can fail emissions inspection where required.
  • Look for a slip-on stamped with an EPA exemption or CARB E.O. number if you need it to remain street-legal and inspection-compliant.

Do I need to remap the ECU for a slip-on?
Usually not — slip-ons have a small enough effect on airflow that most fuel-injected bikes handle it without retuning. A full system removing the catalytic converter almost always needs a tune.
Will an aftermarket exhaust void my warranty?
In the US, the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act prevents a manufacturer from voiding your entire warranty just for an aftermarket part, but they can deny warranty claims on damage the exhaust actually caused, such as a lean-running engine failure.
Is titanium worth the extra cost over steel?
Mainly for the weight savings and heat resistance on track-focused bikes. On a street bike where a few pounds won't be noticed, a quality steel or stainless system offers most of the performance for less money.
